Become a Youth Parliament member
As a Youth Parliament Member (YPM), you represent the issues for young people in your area of Norfolk. You'll also be part of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP).
You represent young people's views on a local, regional and national level. You will have the chance to speak to decision makers in Norfolk about the issues that matter to you.
How to become a youth parliament member
YPMs are elected every two years. Young people in Norfolk vote for their local YPM through a democratic process. The next election will be in 2024 - sign up to hear more about 2024 YPM elections
Any 11-18 year-olds can stand or vote in the election. We will support you to build a campaign that:
- Encourages other young people to vote for you
- Helps you think about how you can make a positive difference
What does a YPM do?
You'll find out what the issues and concerns are for young people in your area. You then represent their views.
YPMs get involved in a variety of events, projects and campaigns. You'll hold debates, make speeches, and ensure decision makers listen to young people.
You'll meet with Government ministers, Government departments and other YPMs across the UK. Together, you'll discuss the issues raised in the UK Youth Parliament manifesto. This manifesto looks at the issues affecting young people across the UK.
What can I get involved in as a YPM?
You'll get to attend events and meetings both in the region and across the UK to campaign on the issues chosen. You'll regularly meet with other YPMs in Norfolk and beyond.
Norfolk Youth Parliament hold up to two meetings a month, which you should attend. We agree the dates and times of the meetings with all YPMs at the start. You should try to be flexible so that we can find a suitable time for everyone.
You'll also get the opportunity to:
- Attend six to ten regional meetings
- Attend residentials with young people from across the UK
- Take part in an annual debate in the House of Commons
- Attend an exclusive four-day residential for elected members where you will build your leadership skills
