Cycling safety tips
Cycling is a great way to stay fit, save money, and help the environment. To help you stay safe while cycling, whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, read the highway code and follow these useful tips:
Be visible
- Wear bright or reflective clothing both day and night. Make sure you are the first thing a driver sees.
- Use lights both day and night. Equip your bike with both front and rear lights. It is the law to use lights at night. Using them during the day can also reduce your chances of being involved in a collision.
Follow the rules of the road
- Follow traffic signals and road signs. Cyclists must follow the same rules as drivers.
- Use hand signals. Clearly indicate your intentions to other road users.
- Position yourself safely to turn or stop
Stay alert
- Watch for hazards. Be aware of potholes and other obstacles that could cause you to lose control.
- Be considerate when using shared cycle and pedestrian lanes.
- Commit to a distraction free ride. Keep your focus on the road and avoid using headphones or mobile phones while cycling.
Wear a helmet
- Protect your head. Wearing a properly fitted helmet is an important safety choice.
Maintain your bike
- Regular checks. Ensure your bike is in good working condition. Check the brakes, tyres, and chain regularly.
- Depending on how often you use your bike it may be useful to have your bike serviced by a professional every 6 to 12 months.
Plan your route
- Choose safe routes. Choose cycle paths and quieter roads where possible.
- Know your route. Familiarise yourself with the route before you set off to avoid any surprises.
Help to find and plan your route:
Be prepared
- Wear suitable clothing for the conditions
- Carry essentials. Always have a basic repair kit, water, snack/energy food, a suitable bike lock and a mobile phone with you.
- Know what to do in an emergency. Familiarise yourself with basic first aid and have emergency contact numbers to hand.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience.
