Rail station forecourt
Started: Monday 30 April
Completed: end September 2018
Details of work
- The station forecourt will be altered to provide clearer areas for taxi parking and an improved bus stop, including a new shelter
- Long and short-stay parking numbers will be the same as the present with a larger car park next to Acle New Road. This will be operational from the start of work.
- New drop off bays will also be provided close to the station entrance
- Wider public realm improvements will lead passengers and cyclists from the railway station through to the Vauxhall Bridge river crossing and onwards towards the town centre
- Train track features will be incorporated into the paving to help guide pedestrians to a raised zebra crossing on the service road which leads to Asda. A similar track feature will help define a cycle route.
- Other work includes a new shared pedestrian and cycle way on the south-eastern side of the station approach road, which will also link with cycle facilities on Acle New Road
- Further aspects of the works include improved lighting, seating and soft landscaping
- A community garden is also proposed – further details of this will follow
Reasons for work
- To improve the public realm in and around the railway station forecourt
- To create a better route between the railway station and market place for pedestrians and cyclists
- To encourage more visitors and residents to consider travelling to and from the town by train
- To improve the appearance and user experience of the route from the station to the town centre, helping to increase footfall and create a safer environment for all users
