Libraries for children and young people with SEND

We care about making our services accessible for all families. This includes families with children, or young people, who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Things we do in all libraries

We:

  • Offer an "equal access" option to help manage your book loans. You can ask a member of staff at your local library or mobile library to apply this to your library card
  • Can suggest times quieter times to visit, if it is too noisy for you
  • Will do our best to adjust lighting so it isn't too light or too dark, whenever possible
  • Are a safe space where you can be yourself
  • Never worry about excited play, noise, outbursts, or meltdowns
  • Are always happy to help you enjoy your visit. Please let us know if there is anything you need

Services in your local library

The following services are available from your local library:

  • Early learning and information books with clear pictures or photos
  • A range of storybooks and information books for all abilities
  • Books on CD. We also provide digital eBooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines and eAudio books.
  • Laptops to borrow for a day in the library, or to take away with you to borrow for two weeks
  • Built-in screen magnification and text-to-speech functionality on our public PCs. This comes as standard as part of the Windows 10 operating system. Learn more about Windows accessibility tools

Extra resources

You can ask us to deliver the following items to your local library or mobile library. Either ask a member of library staff or email libraries@norfolk.gov.uk to arrange a delivery. Read our privacy notice to find out how we use your personal information.

  • Multi-sensory stories (Bag Books)
  • Story Sacks. Go to our list of storysacks. Please ask your local library for more information. A Story Sack contains:
    • A picture book and non-fiction book on the same theme
    • Toys and other objects to help with telling the story
  • Large print books with 16 point text. We have a range of large print titles featuring favourite and popular authors
  • Giant print and braille picture books. We have a small range of popular picture book titles with 75 point text and braille
  • Braille tactile books from the 'Clear Vision' scheme. These picture books have a Braille overlay to each page. This means blind/partially sighted family members can enjoy sharing stories with the rest of the family
