Paying for travel and concessions

Your young person with SEND will need to know how to pay for different kinds of transport. They might also be eligible for reduced fares.

Buses

Most public bus companies offer different ways to pay for travel, including:

• Cash. The bus driver always appreciates the correct fare
• Contactless debit and credit cards. Young people no longer need cash to travel. If they have a contactless debit or credit card, they can pay for tickets up to the value of £100
• The bus company's app on a mobile device. Some apps allow you to buy a ticket or travel pass on behalf of your young person. You can then send it to their mobile device
• Google Pay or Apple Pay

Concessionary bus fares and travel passes

Many bus companies offer concessionary travel fares or schemes for people with disabilities. If your young person is eligible for a disabled travel pass, they can get free or discounted rates on:

• Norfolk Park and Ride journeys
• First buses.

If your young person needs assistance to access and travel on a bus, they may be entitled to the companion enhancement to their pass. This allows a companion to travel for free.

Travel Norfolk fusion day ticket

The travel Norfolk fusion day ticket allows passengers to use all buses run by all operators across Norfolk. It is an ideal solution for both residents and visitors who want to use buses across areas that have services run by different operators. The Norfolk fusion day ticket costs £12 for an adult, £9 for a young person (5-19 years old) or £22 for a group (maximum 2 adults and 3 young people). You can buy a fusion day ticket on board all services or via operator apps.

Trains

You can plan and find information on a train journey and pay for a ticket on:

• National Rail website
• Greater Anglia website. The Bittern Line runs from Norwich to Sheringham. The Wherry Lines run from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and from Norwich to Lowestoft

Concessionary train fares and travel passes

The national disabled persons railcard is available for some people with disabilities (terms and conditions apply). There is a small charge for the card, but it gives a third off adult rail fares for travel on the National Rail network in Great Britain.

If your young person is travelling with another adult, they can also get a third off their rail fare. There are no time restrictions on the disabled persons railcard. It can be used to get discounted tickets at any time of the day.

Coaches

National Express have a disabled coachcard scheme for registered disabled people. There is a small charge for the card, but it gives a third off standard and fully flexible fares, even at peak times.

Taxis

Many taxi companies allow you to book online or via an app, and securely pay for taxi trips.

If your young person needs taxis on a regular basis, it may be worth selecting a taxi company that will allow them to set up an account. They can then get statements and receipts for trips.
