Short breaks foster care
Short breaks give children and young people with physical and/or learning disabilities the chance to:
- Take part in activities
- Explore new opportunities
- Form friendships
- Become more independent
They also provide respite for the child or young person's family.
Disabled children and young people thrive when they are in a familiar environment and develop strong relationships. This means that short breaks foster carers often care for the same child or young person on a regular basis.
Being a short breaks foster carer is a long-term commitment, and matching children with the right carer is important.
Fees for short breaks foster care
- Overnight care: £117 per night (or £78 per carer if two carers are needed to provide two-to-one care)
- Daytime only care: £10.20 per hour (for a maximum of ten hours per day)
- Attending child-focused specialist training: £10.20 per hour
