Housing help and advice
Introduction
We will help you get the skills you need for living on your own. If you are having problems with your accommodation, we can offer support and signpost you to services who can help you.
Independent living skills
We will help you get the skills you need for living on your own.
When you are in care you can access the 'passport to independence' toolkit. This is a document that your carer will work through with you from the age of 12. It details all the skills and knowledge you should gain so you can live independently. Things like how to do your washing, ways to save money on energy bills and how to be a considerate neighbour.
You can also go on a tenancy awareness course and we will give you advice on renting.
Housing problems
Sometimes you may experience issues with your accommodation. This makes living in the accommodation difficult or dangerous. For example:
- Damp or mould
- Neighbour issues
- Overcrowding
- Risk of violence
Some problems can lead to the risk of losing your home and becoming homeless if they are not dealt with. These include, but are not limited to:
- Overdue payment or non-payment of your rent or mortgage
- Anti-social behaviour
- Noise complaints
If you experience any of these issues then you should seek advice straight away.
Where to get help
You can speak to:
- Your personal adviser or social worker
- Your housing officer or neighbourhood officer if you are in social housing
- The landlord if you are in private accommodation
- The environmental health department at your local district council. Find your local district council. If you have major concerns about the condition of your property they can come and look. They can also help with noise complaints
- Your local housing authority or support organisations, if you are at risk of homelessness
Most of the time housing issues can be sorted. However, it is important you get advice and speak to someone as soon as possible.
