Doctors, dentists and opticians
Introduction
The health professionals who can help you keep healthy and how to register for their services.
Doctors
Whether you are feeling physically unwell or struggling with your mental health, contact your GP.
If you are not registered with a GP or move to a new area
Find your local doctors' surgery
You will need to complete a GP registration form. You can get this from the surgery. They will ask for proof of your identity and address. Even if you do not have this, you should still be able to register and make an appointment.
Contact your personal adviser for support if you have problems registering.
Dentists
Do not forget to go to the dentist for a check-up. The time between check-ups can vary from three months to two years. This depends on how healthy your teeth and gums are and your risk of future problems.
Find an NHS dentist
You should be aware that many dentists accept both NHS and private patients. The number of NHS patients they accept may be limited. You may need to join a waiting list.
If you can't find a dentist
If you're struggling to register with a dentist, speak to your personal advisor.
The NHS website explains what to do in an emergency (opens new window).
Opticians
You should get your eyes checked by an optician at least every two years, or whenever you think you need to.
You can get a free NHS eye test if you meet the eligibility criteria or get certain benefits.
