Reading to improve your child's health
Reading with your child can make a huge difference to their development and long-term health.
Children who read well are more likely to do well at school, make friends and have a better social life, which in turn increases their chances of getting a good job, living in better housing, being healthier and living longer. Even if you are not a confident reader yourself, you can make sure children in your family are.
At our libraries we have:
- Dedicated children's sections including novelty and tactile books for younger children, first facts books to introduce concepts such as letters and shapes, simple non-fiction books on themes such as wild animals and new experiences books to help with new situations like moving house or a new baby
- Bounce and rhyme time events for parents and carers with pre-school children
Staff at our libraries are keen to make parents, carers and children feel welcome, happy and comfortable - so there's no need to worry about tantrums, books being pulled off the shelves or the need to feed or take a child to the toilet. No charges are made for accidental damage or overdue books for under-fives.
