People from abroad team
The People from Abroad Team works with refugee families to support their journey to independence in the UK. Our team is greatly supported by a network of volunteers who give their time to assist refugees here in Norfolk.
Our volunteer befrienders meet with locally resettled refugee families on a regular basis to help them build their confidence and independence as they embark on a new chapter in their lives. Befriending with PfAT is a varied and rewarding role, where no two placements or days look the same.
PfAT befrienders use their own expertise, experience and interests to support families via regular, friendly, contact. They provide important support with:
- English Language: By meeting one of our refugee families for a chat our volunteers are giving important opportunities to practise English in a low stakes and comfortable environment
- Community Orientation: Our volunteers help the families get out and about to learn their way around Norwich and get used to their surroundings
- Access to services: Navigating local services when you are unfamiliar with them can be overwhelming. Befrienders help make it easier by providing friendly support with public transport, GP appointments etc.
- Personal development: Arriving in the UK is the next big chapter in the refugee families' lives. Our volunteers help them to find their place in the UK and move on to education, training, and employment
Ultimately all our volunteers play a crucial role in helping people become a part of the wider community. If you have a few hours to give on a regular basis and would like to get involved, then we would love to hear from you.
When you register your interest you will be contacted by our volunteer coordinator who will talk to you in more depth of what is involved in befriending with PfAT, including the application process and what training you will be provided.
