Norwich, the county capital

Norwich, UNESCO'S first city of literature, is consistently rated as one of the UK's safest and greenest cities.

By rail, Norwich is 90 minutes from London, 60 minutes from Cambridge and with connections via Ely to many other destinations. The city has an international airport, with direct flights to Schiphol and onwards to the rest of the world.

Norwich is a fascinating mix of medieval and modern. There are more than 1,500 historic buildings including the 900-year-old cathedral, the Norman castle, Dragon Hall, Pulls Ferry, the Quayside and Bridwell. Norwich also boasts award-winning modern architecture including The Forum, the Cathedral Hostry, the Sainsbury's Centre and the University of East Anglia.

There's an eclectic mix of independent coffee shops, cafés and shops from the cobbled Norwich Lanes to the Art Nouveau-styled Royal Arcade, plus two shopping malls and several department stores. There's also a permanent six-day market and plenty of pedestrianised streets making the city centre easy to walk around.

When it comes to entertainment, Norwich caters for everyone. There are six theatres, a flourishing music scene and four cinemas. There is also a huge choice of gastro pubs, restaurants, al fresco eateries and several lively micro-breweries.
