British Chinese communities celebrated in free exhibitions
A new exhibition from the British Library is coming to several libraries across Norfolk and will be available to view for free.
It reflects the long history of Chinese communities in the UK, who have called the UK home for much longer than many realise. Tracing their heritage back to regions in East and South-East Asia, they've established a rich and diverse culture across the UK.
Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: "We're really pleased for our libraries to host this fantastic collection of photographs, manuscripts, and interviews provides an insight into the remarkable individuals from British Chinese communities around the UK.
"You can get to know the local business owners who set up Europe's first Chinatowns, listen to personal accounts from the descendants of merchant seamen, and uncover the challenges that British Chinese people have encountered through the centuries."
Visit the exhibition to learn and celebrate the history and legacy of this vibrant community, and to understand what it really means to be Chinese and British.
The display will be at the following libraries in Norfolk:
- Gaywood Library: 18 November 2022 to 27 January 2023
- Norwich Millennium Library: 3 February 2023 to 3 March 2023
- Great Yarmouth Library: 10 March 2023 to 23 April 2023
