Celebrate National Numeracy Day with Norfolk County Council's Multiply champions

Norfolk County Council , 16 May 2023 00:00

Norfolk County Council's Multiply champions, who promote maths courses and the benefits of increasing these skills, are holding a series of events across the county during National Numeracy Day (17 May).

The champions will be offering support and advice in places such as King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth. They will be able to provide information about numeracy courses which are being delivered by our education partners, including Norfolk County Council Adult Learning, City College Norwich, East Coast College, and College of West Anglia which have been funded by £1.6m this year with more funding available until the end of March 2025.

These courses, along with training and courses by smaller organisations and grassroots providers, have been shaped by research carried out by the Norfolk Community Foundation.

Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: "We're proud to celebrate National Numeracy Day, and our Multiply Champions will be on hand to prove why it's important to boost your skills. They'll be able to show you that maths doesn't have to be boring, and they'll explain how improving your numeracy skills can help in the real world. There are so many benefits to increasing your understanding of maths, from helping you to budget, or boosting your confidence with helping your children with their homework."

The Champions will be at various community spaces where you can try your hand at estimating the price of items in a shopping basket, as well as calculating the change you'd get. There will also be champions at the Norwich Pottergate Jobcentre Job Fair who will be able to provide information on what's on offer locally.

You can speak to a champion at the following locations on the 17 May:

  • At The Forum in Norwich from 10am to 4pm
  • At the library in King's Lynn from 10am to 4pm
  • At the library in Gorleston from 10am to 12pm
  • At the library in Great Yarmouth, alongside the Just a Cuppa group, from 2pm to 3pm
  • At the Job Fair at the Pottergate Job Centre Plus from 10am to 12pm
