Celebrate Car Free Day with your neighbours this September

Norfolk County Council , 18 July 2024 11:53

Norfolk County Council is once again offering free road closures for residents wanting to celebrate World Car Free Day on 22 September 2024.

Car-Free Day encourages residents to leave their cars behind and explore alternative transportation methods, such as cycling, walking, or utilising public transport. By choosing these options, residents can actively contribute to reducing carbon emissions and support a cleaner, greener future.

Residents have three ways to participate: host a street party with games, music, and food; create a play street where kids can safely play and ride bikes; or simple enjoy a quiet day in a car-free environment.

Councillor Graham Plant, Norfolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: "Car Free Day is a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to come together and enjoy what our beautiful streets have to offer when they are free of traffic. We are committed to reducing environmental impact and enhancing the quality of life for all our residents. This event is a step forward in promoting sustainable transport solutions and community well-being."

During Car Free Day, Beryl is providing FREE rides to all users to facilitate their journey. For those looking to change the way they travel, you can visit www.travelnorfolk.co.uk to plan your journey, whether by foot, bike, or public transport.

Matt White, founder of Car-Free Norwich, commented on the community impact: "Car Free Day not only promotes environmental benefits and healthier lifestyles but also brings people together in unique and joyful ways. Seeing children playing safely right on their doorsteps and neighbours reconnecting without the usual barriers of traffic is truly heartwarming. It's about reclaiming our streets for laughter, friendship, and community."

Road closures for the day will be free of charge, residents wishing to participate can apply for a road closure by 23 August 2024. Norfolk Car Free Day is taking place on Sunday 22 September.

In addition anyone living in an 'AtoBetter housing development' can apply for a voucher for £100 towards their street event as well as a free Dr Bike session for the street. Find out more on AtoBetter Car Free Day funding page.
