Portland Street and Blackfriars Road Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP)

Norfolk County Council is asked for feedback on proposed changes to Portland Street and Blackfriars Road in King's Lynn. The aim of the scheme is to improve the accessibility of the bus stop area for both bus drivers and passengers alike.

Overview

Current bus stops at Blackfriars Road aren't as accessible as they could be, for instance an inappropriate kerb height can make it difficult for those using wheelchairs to access buses. Also, delays to traffic, especially buses, can occur due to general traffic using bus stops for drop off/pick up purposes so we want to make it easier for buses and traffic to move through this area.

What are we proposing?

We propose making the bus stops more accessible for people getting on and off the buses and plan to make amendments to on-street parking, extend the existing yellow box and resurface certain areas with more durable material. In addition to this, we plan to stop loading/unloading on a short section of Portland Street and install a new above-ground bus stop line detector, which means only buses will be given a green light to exit the stop area, preventing cars making use of them.

Only 12 responses were received to the consultation. Views were mixed over the proposed changes to on street parking provision and prohibition of loading on Portland Street but all other proposals were widely supported.

These changes are necessary to support the delivery of our Bus Service Improvement Plan.
