Edward Street
October 2018
Details of work:
- A cycle-only direct crossing over Magpie Road between Edward Street and Heath Road, with low-level signals and push button control
- Heath Road closed to motorised vehicles at its junction with Magpie Road, with access limited to pedestrians and cyclists
- Removal of the existing road closure outside No.8 Heath Road
- Amendments to the existing residents' parking and limited waiting areas, with extra restrictions to aid vehicle manoeuvres at the proposed new road closure
- A new cycle track through Norwich City Council-owned land next to No.82 Magpie Road to give a more direct route to cyclists, away from the junction with Edward Street
- A section of Edward Street (on Esdelle Street side) towards the Magpie Road junction to be converted to a shared cycleway/footway
- A 2m section of double yellow lines at the end of Esdelle Street with cycle markings to allow access by pedestrians and cyclists between Edward Street and Esdelle Street
The existing two-stage signalised crossing will remain for pedestrians and cyclists to use.
Reasons for work:
- Create a direct crossing for cyclists to make the area safer and reduce delays.
- Reduce conflict between cyclists and pedestrians at the existing crossing and on the shared pedestrian/cycle path on Edward Street.
