Norwich Train Station area

Norfolk County Council and Transport for Norwich partners made a number of improvements to the area around Norwich Train Station. The aims of the scheme were to improve bus journey times as well as facilities for those walking and cycling through the area.  

Why was this proposed?

Primarily to improve bus journey times into the city centre for the 300 buses-a-day using this busy section of road as well as improving access and safety for those wishing to walk or cycle.

Background

All feedback received during the consultation was reviewed and plans revised in response, where appropriate. The points raised were presented in a report to members of the Transport for Norwich Joint Committee, along with the final proposed version of the scheme for construction.

Councillors voted to approve the scheme for construction at the meeting held on 10 June but a decision on a further section of inbound cycle lane on Prince of Wales Road and associated changes (items 4 and 9 on the plan) was deferred while the Connecting the Norwich Lanes proposals are under development. The Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded £32m of funding to TfN from the Transforming Cities Fund to deliver a range of schemes across Greater Norwich. These projects aim to improve access to jobs, training and retail by supporting improvements to sustainable modes of transport, while also responding to issues around air quality.

Speeding up public transport on key routes across the city is a core focus of our Transforming Cities programme. We are already seeing significant journey time savings across the network through improvements delivered so far and this scheme will put us in a much stronger position to work with bus operators and central government to secure future funding for zero emission buses.
