Our pedestrian training encourages young people to reflect on their knowledge, attitudes and choices when walking.

We offer pedestrian courses with a staged approach to learning.

Aims

To enable children and young people to:

  • Build understanding and knowledge that empower positive roadside behaviours
  • Encourage the practice of life skills needed to become safe and confident pedestrians
  • Support active and independent travel choices

Who it's for

These pedestrian training sessions are for primary and secondary school students.

We offer sessions at different levels for different year groups:

  • Level 1 - suitable for key stage 2 (years 3 and 4)
  • Level 2 - suitable for key stage 2 (years 5 and 6)
  • Level 3 - suitable for key stage 3 (years 7 and 8)

Teachers can decide if each level would also be suitable for other year groups.

Course details

We deliver the sessions live, via Microsoft Teams. Sessions run for approximately 45-60 minutes.

We can deliver sessions to:

  • A single class
  • Multiple classes
  • Home education families

Level 1 pedestrian training

Suitable for years 3 and 4.

Level 1 offers an introduction into the basic skills of being pedestrian.

Subjects covered:

  • Green Cross Code
  • Identifying safer places to cross
  • Identifying what indicators, reverse lights and brake lights mean on a vehicle

Level 2 pedestrian training

Suitable for years 5 and 6.

Level 2 builds on level 1. It offers more detail and understanding of the skills, behaviours and choices to be a safe pedestrian.

Subjects covered:

  • Green Cross Code
  • Identifying safer places to cross
  • Identifying what indicators, reverse lights and brake lights mean on a vehicle
  • Road signs, road markings and shared paths
  • Road safety features around school
  • Perspectives of other road users

Level 3 pedestrian training

Suitable for years 7 and 8.

Level 3 offers an introduction into advanced skills of being a safe and resilient pedestrian.

Subjects covered:

  • Independent travel
  • Shared responsibility
  • The highway code
  • Hierarchy of road users
  • Road safety features around school
  • Perspectives of other road users

Cost

These sessions are free.

Norfolk County Council Public Health funds them.
