Ride On It cycle skills training
Our online cycling safety sessions teach pupils the key concepts of being a cyclist. It acts as an introduction and support for our practical Bikeability training courses.
We deliver these sessions in a staged approach. This is to build confidence, knowledge, understanding and resilience. It also builds a sense of independence and responsibility into journeys.
Our aims
Our aims are to enable children and young people to:
- Build understanding and knowledge to empower positive cycling preparation and behaviours
- Engage the necessary life skills needed to become safe and confident cyclists
- Support their active and independent travel choices
Course details
We deliver the sessions live, via Microsoft Teams. Sessions run for approximately 45 - 60 minutes.
These sessions are suitable for key stage 2 and key stage 3 pupils.
We can deliver sessions to:
- A single class
- Multiple classes
- Home education families
Sessions for year 4, 5 and 6
This online session offers an introduction into the basic skills of being a cyclist.
Subjects covered:
- Preparing for your journey
- Helmet checks
- Visibility - be bright, be seen
- Bike checks
- Identifying safer places to cycle - explaining shared paths and cycle lanes
- Cycling top tips
- Introducing Bikeability
- Perspectives of other road users
Sessions for year 7, 8 and 9
This online session offers an introduction into advanced skills of being a cyclist.
Subjects covered:
- Independent travel
- Shared responsibility
- The Highway Code
- Hierarchy of road users
- Perspectives of other road users
- Be switched on
- Kerb smart
- Blind spots
- Riding around pedestrians and horses
- Introducing Bikeability
Cost
These sessions are free.
Norfolk County Council Public Health funds them.
