Recycling centre booking system

Introduction

In November 2024 we will introduce a booking system for all Norfolk recycling centres.

The booking system will help:

  • Reduce congestion
  • Reduce waiting times
  • Save the council money by spreading customer visits across our opening hours
  • Reduce the risk of traders disposing of waste without paying

When will the booking system be introduced?

The booking system will be introduced in November 2024 - the exact launch date will be confirmed closer to the time.

How will I make a booking?

You will be able to book a slot using the Norfolk County Council website, up to seven days in advance. Booking slots are every 15 minutes.

When you book you select the date, time and recycling centre you want to visit. We will then send you a booking confirmation by email.

You will be able to cancel or rearrange your booking if needed.

How will people who don't use the internet book?

People who don't have access to the internet can call our Customer Service Centre to make a booking.

Call: 0344 800 8020
Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm

Norfolk libraries provide internet access, for anyone without the internet at home.

What will happen when I arrive at the recycling centre?

Staff on site will check you in when you arrive. If you get there early or late, we will do our best to let you in, or you can make an alternative booking.

Do other councils use booking systems?

Many other local authorities use booking systems to manage their recycling centres. Suffolk County Council has used a booking system since 2021, and Essex County Council since 2023.

Will the booking system increase fly tipping?

Other councils that already have booking systems, including Suffolk and Essex, have not found any evidence that the booking process has increased fly-tipping levels.

In January 2023, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) carried out a study to find if there were any links between recycling centre booking systems and incidents of fly-tipping. Surveys and interviews carried out with local authorities did not show a link between booking systems and fly-tipping.

Will I need to book to visit a reuse shop?

You don't need to book to visit a reuse shop to shop or to donate items. But you will need to book if you want to leave any waste at the recycling centre during the same visit.

What happens if I don't have a booking?

You will need to make a booking to leave waste at our recycling centres, including visits on foot or bicycle. Bookings can be made on the day and up until the time of the booking slot.

Do trade waste customers need a booking?

Yes, all trade waste customers will need to book and provide their waste carriers licence number at the time of booking.
