Initiative encourages young cyclists to illuminate their rides day and night for enhanced safety
Norfolk's Safety Camera Partnership with the support of Norfolk County Council are encouraging young cyclists across Norfolk to "be switched on" both day and night by offering a free set of bike lights on completion of their cycle training this year.
It became apparent during Bikeability training commissioned by Norfolk County Council and delivered by Outspoken, SJ3 and Pedal Power; that some cyclists in Norfolk either don't have access to bike lights or choose not to use them.
In response to this community need, Norfolk's Safety Camera Partnership agreed to fund bike lights for Year 6 cyclists who complete their cycle training from September 2024, supporting their transition to high school.
The benefits of using bike lights can improve the visibility for the cyclist and other road users. A Danish study in 2012 found that the risk of a collision with a car decreased by 19% in cyclists who used their lights during the day.
Cllr Bill Borrett Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing said: 'It is vital that young people can be seen on their bikes and am delighted to support this initiative which will encourage them to be safer. I really want them to feel safe enough to be able to travel more independently. Whilst the use of lights is important, one should remember that vehicle drivers also have a role to play; by staying focused, slowing down, and giving space to other road users.'
Louise Smith from Pedal Power said: 'The more visible we can make children cycling to and from school, the better. We've noticed through our work delivering Bikeability courses that most children don't have lights. This initiative will significantly increase their visibility to other road users.'
Norfolk Constabulary's Assistant Chief Constable Julie Dean said: 'Reinvesting in road safety is a key priority for Norfolk's Safety Camera Partnership. We are pleased to offer free bike lights and road safety education to children across Norfolk, who have worked hard to achieve their Bikeability award. Whilst the initiative enhances the visibility of cyclists, it also serves as a reminder for drivers to stay focused and alert, especially when sharing the road with vulnerable road users.'
