Learner drivers and riders
Learning to drive offers freedom and independence. It can also be a time of mixed emotions. It is normal to feel excited and nervous as you navigate learning to drive.
Learner drivers should aim for around:
- 45 hours of professional driving lessons, and
- 22 hours of private driving practice between driving lessons
Experience and practise will give you a better chance of passing your driving test. It will also support you to become a safe and independent driver.
Trying to pass your test quickly can cost you more time and money in the long run. It won't give you enough controlled teaching experiences of driving in different situations.

After passing your driving test
Be aware of the penalty point conditions for new drivers who are within the first two years of passing the test. Learn more about the penalty points for new drivers on the GOV.UK website.
Once you have passed your test, your learning to drive experience continues. Driving is an important skill that we continue to develop and work on for many years after we pass.
Practise, experience and exposure to different environments makes you a good driver.
Even experienced drivers need to practise and reflect on:
- Safe driving habits
- Becoming familiar with driving a new car and
- Becoming familiar with driving in different conditions
- Keeping up to date with changes in the highway code
- Keeping up to date with driving practice
