Road safety advice for driving and riding for work
A vehicle is one of the most used pieces of equipment in an organisation. If you are an organisation with people who drive, ride or cycle for work, it is important to promote:
- Effective management of occupational road risk
- A positive driving culture across the workplace
- Safe behaviours using safe and well-maintained vehicles
Doing this can:
- Increase staff morale and compliance to health and safety requirements
- Reduce loss of working hours due to ill health and injuries
- Increase the effectiveness and efficiencies of vehicles
Positive road safety behaviours for your organisation
Road safety is a shared responsibility. It is important to set and model safe habits whether you:
- Operate for or within in a small or large organisation
- Drive or ride for work using a company vehicle, your own vehicle or use a hired vehicle
Positive road safety habits you should integrate into your organisation:
- Promote driving policies. Weave them into your organisations culture.
- Carry out car and bike safety checks before you start your journey
- Be aware of long journeys where fatigue may be an issue. Take regular breaks.
- Do not make hands-free calls whilst in control of any vehicle. Make using hands- free phones a socially unacceptable activity. Learn more about hands-free phones on the Road Safety Trust website.
- Encourage and comply to safe and legal speed limits all the time. Watch the No need to speed video on YouTube for information on why it's important to keep within speed limits.
