Surface flooding works in Heacham

Ditch in a country field being cleared out by a digger

Issue

This location needed work because of historic surface water flooding. It required multi-agency input to resolve.

Solution

The Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk led the multi-agency investigation. They worked closely with:

  • The Internal Drainage Board (IDB) which is part of the Water Management Alliance
  • Norfolk County Council (NCC) highways department
  • Anglian Water
  • Heacham Parish Council

After identifying three key issues, the work took place in early 2023. NCC highways department and the IDB:

  • Cleared tree root ingress and re-lined the highways drainage beneath Station Road
  • Cleared the drainage ditch
  • Jetted the outlet pipe

Result

After completing these works, the surface water flooding of Station Road has been successfully alleviated. There has been no reported or observed surface water flooding incidents since.

Station Road Heacham is a key example of how multi-agency working has successfully resolved a localised surface water flooding issue.
