Gorleston flood protection scheme

Flood warning road sign on a residential road

Anglian Water worked with the Norfolk Strategic Flooding Alliance to deliver a £4 million flood protection scheme in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth.

Issue

The scheme was driven by a history of surface water flooding in the town. This happened on Burgh Road and Beccles Road where some residents experienced internal flooding.

Solution

The solution consisted of multiple elements to both improve the sewer network and increase storm water storage.

  1. A new manhole, valve and kiosk were installed on Colomb Road. This allowed the pre-existing culvert to store excess foul flows during heavy rainfall.
  2. The sewer pipes on the High Street were diverted. A new sewer was installed under Burgh Road alongside a new pumping station and storm tank under Beccles Road.

Result

The result is additional capacity in the sewer network which increases flood resilience during heavy rainfall.

Anglian Water worked with the local highways department to improve the road drainage on their behalf. They installed nine additional gullies on Burgh Road. This reflects the importance of a multi-agency approach to flood prevention.

There were some delivery challenges with the location of utilities pipes, but these were overcome and this scheme was completed in June 2023.
